Intellectual Property

Intellectual property is created through intellectual activities such as scientific invention and expressive creativity. Inventions are subject to patent law (see patents) and expressions are subject to copyright law (see copyrights). Other forms of intellectual property include trademarks and trade secrets.

Although there are special laws that deal with these particular forms of intellectual property, in other respects the standard laws of property apply to them. You can own intellectual property, license your intellectual property rights to others, or dispose of those rights through sale or gift, will or trust, or have them taken from you through bankruptcy proceedings.
